iMessage API Free Trials and Sandboxes Compared (2026)
Written by ZeroSettle. We make one of the products compared.
Most free iMessage API plans are sandboxes: a shared number with a small cap on contacts or messages, built for testing rather than production. ZeroSettle Pro has no free tier; it has a 30-day money-back guarantee: $49/month for a dedicated iMessage number that can message first, refunded in full if you ask within 30 days. Free options we checked on October 25, 2026: Sendblue (10 contacts, no outbound), Linq Hobby (20 contacts) and a 7-day Linq Pro trial, LoopMessage (5 contacts), Blooio (20 messages), Courio (100 outbound messages) and Photon (shared numbers).
Price check, October 25, 2026: ZeroSettle Pro is $49/month for a dedicated iMessage number that can message first. No managed iMessage API we checked publishes a lower price for a dedicated number (checked October 25, 2026). Courio also lists $49 (Starter: 500 outbound/month, then $0.02/message), and shared numbers or services that run on your own iPhone or Mac cost less. Pro opens 5 new contacts a day per number, fewer than the 30–50 most $99+ plans allow; people who text first are never limited. See what a dedicated iMessage number costs at each provider and the ZeroSettle iMessage API.
Key takeaways
- Free tiers are for testing: every free tier we found uses a shared number, a sandbox environment, or hardware you supply.
- Who lets you send first for free: Courio's Sandbox lists 100 outbound messages and Blooio's Free Trial 20 messages in total. Sendblue's sandbox has no outbound messaging, and Linq Hobby contacts must text first.
- Time-limited trials: Linq Pro has a 7-day free trial with no credit card; Texting Blue has a 3-day trial on your own iPhone.
- ZeroSettle: Pro has no free tier; it has a 30-day money-back guarantee on the $49/month subscription. You can text yourself a test message from your new number during signup, before you pay.
- What a sandbox can't show you: how your own paid number behaves, including its daily limit for messaging new people first.
Which iMessage APIs have a free trial or sandbox?
Eight of the iMessage API services we checked offer a free sandbox or free tier, Linq and Texting Blue offer a free trial of a paid plan, and the self-hosted options are free software that runs on a Mac you supply. The table lists each free option, what it allows, and the cheapest published paid plan, so you can see what you would move to after testing. ZeroSettle is an iMessage API: a real phone number on real iMessage, running on Apple hardware we operate for you in a server facility, that your code texts customers from and hears back on through a bearer token and signed webhooks.
| Provider | Free option | What the free option allows | Cheapest published paid plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| ZeroSettle | None; 30-day money-back guarantee | A test message from your new number to your own phone during signup; the API answers 402 until you subscribe | Pro $49/month: 1 dedicated number that can message first, 5 new contacts a day, no setup fee |
| Sendblue | Free Sandbox, $0, no credit card | Shared phone number, up to 10 verified contacts who text you first, "No outbound messaging", "No webhooks or callbacks" | AI Agent $100/month per dedicated line, inbound-first; "Full outbound messaging" is Enterprise, Contact Sales |
| Linq | Hobby, $0/mo; Pro "7 Day Free Trial" | Hobby: Linq's API through its CLI, up to 20 contacts, and each contact "must text the Linq Number first" (CLI quickstart). Pro trial: "No credit card required to sign up" | Pro "Starting at $260/mo" (the page does not say per line) |
| LoopMessage | Sandbox, $0 | 5 contacts | Shared sender $20/month for AI assistants, starting with 50 monthly contacts; a dedicated sender that can message first is about $104.99/month plus $60 once with the add-ons it needs (our arithmetic) |
| Blooio | Free Trial, $0, no credit card | 20 messages in total (not monthly) on a shared number | Starter $39/month, shared number, 5 new contacts a day; Commercial Dedicated $289/month per line |
| Courio | Sandbox, $0, no credit card | "Shared sandbox number", "100 outbound messages", SDKs and webhooks; Courio says it is "permanently free" | Starter $49/month: 1 dedicated line, 500 outbound included, then $0.02/message |
| Photon | Free plan; open source | Free: "Managed Shared" numbers from a pool, one per user. Open source: runs on your own Mac and iCloud account | Pro $25/month, shared, up to 100 users; Business $250/line/month for dedicated lines |
| Miss Blue | Free sandbox | A sandbox, not a live number | $99/month per number on sale (normally $198); setup normally $479, $0 if you start before October 31, 2026 |
| Blue Reacher | Free API/MCP sandbox ("Limited offer") | Testing its API and MCP server | $249/line/month, plus $449 activation (waived on annual billing) |
| Project Blue | None on its pricing page; demo first | Its HubSpot Marketplace listing mentions a 14-day trial | $166/month per line billed annually ($1,998/year), or $199/month on a 12-month commitment; setup waived |
| Texting Blue | 3-day free trial | Runs on your own iPhone and number | Lite $19/number/month on your iPhone and carrier plan, up to 100 messages a day |
| myCRMSIM | None listed; full refund within 30 days | — | About $29/line/month for the software (from press coverage; its pricing page renders in the browser and we could not read it), plus your own Mac, iPhone and carrier plan per line |
| BlueBubbles | Free software | Self-hosted on your own Mac and Apple ID | Optional Pro: $3/month, $30/year or $55 lifetime |
Courio also lists $49 (Starter: 500 outbound/month, then $0.02/message). Courio is a newcomer whose site renders in the browser; we read its plans from the site's own code and found no third-party coverage of it. Shared numbers (LoopMessage $20, Photon $25, Blooio $39) and options on your own hardware (Texting Blue $19, myCRMSIM about $29 plus hardware, BlueBubbles free) cost less than $49 but are not a dedicated number we run for you. Miss Blue's figures come from a summary of its pricing page.

What is the difference between a sandbox and a free trial?
A sandbox is a free test environment that does not expire, usually on a shared number with a cap on contacts or messages. A free trial is time-limited access to a paid plan. Most iMessage API providers offer the first, not the second.
- Sandboxes: Sendblue, Linq Hobby, LoopMessage, Courio, Miss Blue and Blue Reacher. Courio calls its Sandbox "permanently free" and "a real trial environment, not a 14-day countdown".
- Trials of a paid plan: Linq Pro (7 days, no credit card) and Texting Blue (3 days, on your own iPhone). Blooio's Free Trial is capped by message count: 20 messages in total.
- Shared pools as the free tier: Photon's Free plan gives each of your users a number from a pool Photon maintains. That works for testing an agent, but the number is not yours.
The difference matters for what you learn. A sandbox shows you the API's shape: authentication, the send call, webhook payloads and errors. It does not show you how a number of your own behaves in production, because the free number is shared or capped, and paid plans have their own rules for messaging people first.
Does ZeroSettle have a free trial?
Pro has no free tier; it has a 30-day money-back guarantee. Pro is $49/month for one dedicated iMessage number that can message first, billed monthly by Stripe, with no setup fee, and ZeroSettle's docs say to "ask within 30 days and you are refunded in full and the subscription is cancelled". The guarantee covers the subscription, not credit packs. Growth, $599/month for 3 numbers plus $199 per extra number, has the same guarantee.
What you can do before you pay, from ZeroSettle's "Your iMessage number" docs:
- Press Get started and sign in with your phone number. A number is set aside for you while you finish.
- Say what the number is for. That claims it.
- Set your brand name and photo, and text your personal number a test message from the new number (you can skip this).
- Subscribe. The console and API open once the subscription is active; until then the API answers
402to everything. Numbers not paid for within 30 minutes are released.
The same steps run from an AI coding agent through ZeroSettle's MCP connector (connector docs). Numbers can sell out; when they do, there is a waitlist.
The limits to know before you start the 30 days: Pro opens 5 new contacts a day per number; people who text first, and ongoing conversations, never count toward it. Each number handles up to 10,000 messages a day with known contacts, at most 2 unanswered messages go to one contact, and there is no SMS fallback, so a first message to someone not on iMessage returns 422 not_on_imessage (limits docs).
What are the refund terms if you skip the trial?
If a provider offers no free trial of its paid plan, its refund terms decide what testing costs you. ZeroSettle and myCRMSIM refund in full within 30 days; Linq, Project Blue and Texting Blue call their fees non-refundable.
| Provider | Refunds and contract |
|---|---|
| ZeroSettle | "ask within 30 days and you are refunded in full and the subscription is cancelled"; covers the subscription, not credit packs; cancel any time from the console |
| Linq | "Unless otherwise stated, fees are non-refundable"; the term renews unless you give notice at least 30 days before it ends |
| LoopMessage | Prepaid; a refund only for a technical issue support can't resolve; a sender blocked after recipient reports is "non-refundable" |
| Blooio | "Cancel anytime"; fees are not refunded after a suspension for an acceptable-use violation |
| Project Blue | "All payments are non-refundable once a billing period has begun"; leaving a commitment early owes the remaining term plus any waived setup fees |
| Texting Blue | "non-refundable except as required by law" |
| myCRMSIM | Full refund within the first 30 days |
Sendblue's pricing page offers the free sandbox and states no refund terms. ZeroSettle's terms were last modified October 22, 2026.
What should you test before you pay for an iMessage API?
Whether you use a sandbox, a trial or a refund window, test the parts that differ most between providers. On ZeroSettle you can run all of them during the 30-day refund window.
- Send to yourself and reply. Confirm the message arrives as a blue bubble, see how your brand name and photo show, and check that your reply reaches your server. On ZeroSettle a reply reaches your webhook about 1–2 seconds after it reaches the number.
- Verify webhook signatures. ZeroSettle signs every webhook with HMAC-SHA256 over
"<t>." + raw bodywith a 300-second tolerance; the webhook docs have Python and Node verifiers, and how iMessage webhooks work explains retries. - Message a new person first. Sandboxes often can't. Check the paid plan's daily limit: 5 new contacts a day per number on ZeroSettle Pro, 50 on Growth.
- Send to a number that isn't on iMessage. See what the API does. ZeroSettle refuses with
422 not_on_imessageand sends nothing; providers with SMS fallback send a green bubble instead. - Put a link in a first message. An iPhone won't make a link tappable from an unknown sender until the recipient replies or saves the contact (why), on every provider.
The "Send a message" docs have the send call; the docs' examples use curl, Python, Node and Swift.
When is a free sandbox the better choice?
A free sandbox is the better choice when you only need to learn an API's shape, or when you can't commit $49 even with a refund window. Pick one of these instead of ZeroSettle when:
- You want to build against an API before paying anything. Linq Hobby (20 contacts), Sendblue (10 contacts, inbound only), LoopMessage (5 contacts) and Courio (100 outbound messages) cost nothing.
- You want to try a paid plan for a week without a card. Linq Pro's 7-day trial does that, at "Starting at $260/mo" afterwards.
- You already own a Mac or an iPhone. BlueBubbles is free software on your Mac, and Texting Blue's 3-day trial runs on your iPhone; see self-hosting vs a managed API.
- You need Android reach. ZeroSettle has no SMS fallback. Sendblue, Linq and LoopMessage offer one.
Choose ZeroSettle when you want a dedicated number that can message first from day one, at $49/month flat with no per-message fees on API texts, and a full refund if it doesn't work for you within 30 days. Side-by-side comparisons: ZeroSettle vs Linq, ZeroSettle vs LoopMessage and ZeroSettle vs Blooio.
How we checked
We read each provider's own pricing page on October 25, 2026. Refund terms come from each provider's terms or refund policy, read on October 8, 2026. We tested no competitor accounts.
- Sendblue, Linq, Photon, Blue Reacher and Project Blue: we downloaded the pricing pages and read the HTML. Blooio: its pricing.md, which marks Starter and the Free Trial as shared numbers.
- Courio's pricing page renders in the browser, so we read its plans and FAQ from the site's own JavaScript bundle.
- Miss Blue: a summary of its pricing page. myCRMSIM: press coverage and third-party pages, because its pricing page renders in the browser and we could not read it; treat that price as approximate.
- ZeroSettle: its API docs (checked October 25, 2026) and iMessage API Terms (last modified October 22, 2026).
Prices and free tiers change often; confirm on each provider's page before you sign up. We log changes to this page in the changelog.
Frequently asked questions
Does ZeroSettle have a free trial?
Pro has no free tier; it has a 30-day money-back guarantee. Pro is $49/month for a dedicated iMessage number that can message first, and if you ask within 30 days you are refunded in full and the subscription is cancelled. The guarantee covers the subscription, not credit packs. During signup you can text your own phone a test message from the new number before you pay.
Which free iMessage API sandbox lets you send the most messages?
Of the free options with a stated cap that we checked on October 25, 2026, Courio's Sandbox lists the most: 100 outbound messages on a shared sandbox number. Blooio's Free Trial is 20 messages in total, Linq Hobby allows up to 20 contacts, LoopMessage's sandbox allows 5 contacts, and Sendblue's sandbox has no outbound messaging. Courio is a newcomer we found no third-party coverage of.
Can you test messaging someone first on a free iMessage API plan?
Only on some. Sendblue's Free Sandbox lists "No outbound messaging" and contacts text you first, and Linq's Hobby contacts must text the Linq number first. Courio's Sandbox lists 100 outbound messages. A shared sandbox number also cannot show you the daily new-contact limit your own paid number will have, so read each provider's limits before you buy.
Is an iMessage API sandbox the same as a free trial?
No. A sandbox is a free test environment that does not expire, usually on a shared number with a cap on contacts or messages. A free trial is time-limited access to a paid plan: Linq Pro has a 7-day free trial with no credit card, and Texting Blue has a 3-day free trial that runs on your own iPhone.
What happens to the number if I get a ZeroSettle refund?
The refund cancels the subscription. ZeroSettle's terms say numbers assigned to your lines remain ZeroSettle's property, and once a subscription is no longer active the number is reclaimed and may be reassigned. ZeroSettle documents no porting, so plan to stop using the number.
